Hi Guys

Iam a bit of a newbee and have searched the forum for the best OS for a New HTPC I am building . Iam mainly gonna be using it to watch Divx movies...

Which OS in you opinion works best and will get the most out of Hardware. I was thinking of Vista 64 bit .. but have never used vista before and have all bad things.. my instinct is to stick to xp 32 bit ( shame MP is not compatible with xp 64)

Any help would be appreciated.

Spec

AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+
Samsung SpinPoint F1 HD103UJ 1TB Hard Drive SATAII
Asus M2N68-AM Geforce 7025 Socket AM2+
Palit 9500GT 1GB DDR2 VGA DVI HDMI PhysX and Cuda ready
4 gig DDR 2 6400 RAM

Regards

Ish

I dont know if it is the best. But I use Vista 64 on a similar config and everything works great.
Maybe you should look if for all your devices x64 driver are available. (before you install it ;))

XP SP3 for sure, no need to instal VISTA fat boy :)

    BTW:
    - 1GB RAM is enought for Mediaportal HTPC.
    - get any "ee" series CPU, like AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ EE
    - if you will have interlaced videos, get AMD Phenom or Intel C2D
    - i think WD disk "Green Power" series are much suitable for HTPC
    - get ATI 4550 (fanless) GPU for full DXVA (HD, Full HD, DVD) - GeForce 9500GT have only advanced DXVA support. More info here: http://www.missingremote.com/index....=view&id=2564&Itemid=232&limit=1&limitstart=1
You can tweek Windows XP to not look like windows (replace boot screen, disable windows messages, wellcome screens, etc) and you have perfect&fast booting HTPC!

What are the advantages with MP if using vista 64...I cant really see the advantages. I am not really using the machine for anything else. .... MP is still a 32 bit app.. Will it work more smoothly / faster on a 64 OS

MP will definitly not run faster on a 64bit OS.
you might find yourself in serous troubles when looking for stable 64bit drivers for your hardware. especially TV-cards.

I'm going to re-install this weekend with Windows 7..

That'll be my recommendation for the day !..
So you are installing a BETA version of a new OS which includes a Timebomb on a productive system?
Man, you are realy bold. :D
