Can I use MCE 2005 as a server for Media Portal? (1 Viewer)

Hello everyone,

I just set up Media Portal on a HTPC that is connected to my TV. We currently have MCE 2005 on our main computer hooked to our home LAN doing the recording of TV shows etc. Since we are really new to Media Portal I need to give it a little more time to become familar with it and get all of our movies and stuff configured so we are not wanting to install Media Portal on the mail home computer just yet. The install of Media Portal on our HTPC does not have any TV support at this time becuase it does not have a TV tuner card in it. Is there a way to have media portal on my HTPC interact with MCE 2005 on my home main computer? It would be nice to have the recorded TV shows show up in Media Portal like they do in MCE 2005. It would also be nice to be able to schedule recording on the MCE 2005 computer from Media Portal.

If this cannot happen, is there a way to have both MCE 2005 and media portal working on the same computer?

Yes you can have MP on the same PC as MCE. However, you would select the custom install option and only install the TV Server there to handle the recordings. You do not need a tuner card in the HTPC. In the mean time, yes you can probably have the MCE recordings show up in MP on the HTPC. You can install the TVSeries plugin and point it to the shared recording folder on the MCE PC. Although I'm not sure of the file format or file naming convention used in MCE.

You should select advanced installation in the installation wizard, install "MP Client" onto your new HTPC and install "TV Server" on to the Main PC that has the tuner cards. Any epg software should be installed onto the PC that runs TV Server.

MCE 2005 and mediaportal can not directly indirect, but they can indirectly interact.

MCE 2005 and MP wont share the same tv recordings. You can however share the mce recordings folder on your Main PC over the network. Then add the network share directory to the HTPC, MP Config: Videos: Directory. That way you can watch recordings made with MCE 2005 on the HTPC using mediaportal

You should not use TV Series plugin to browse the MCE 2005 recordings folder as the file name formating wont be correct.

If you schedule recordings in mediaportal then tvserver will record the show, but it wont be available directly to MCE 2005, however you can add the tv server recordings folder to the MCE 2005 and just browse the recordings.

Thanks for the help. BTW I noticed that you are in New Zealand and hope your family and friends are ok after the quake. Looked kind of bad. Also my log in is nzdreamer because after visiting in 2003 I cannot stop thinking about that place. If you have not gong to the black water rafting company, put it on your list. Very fun to see the inside of a cave the way they show it to you.

Back to media portal. I was going to try this however when I tried to upgrade my computer with the tv tuner card in it I cannot install the .Net Framework 3.5 SP1. I just get errors and it won't install I have tried removing all the .NET stuff and reinstalling and that didn't work. Then I tried to use a clean up tool and reinstall, still no luck. I also cannot get the 1.1 SP1 to install so for now I am stuck not able to install media portal on the computer with the TV tuner card. Got any tips for this hurdle?

Sounds like you are in dire need of a clean install of Windows.
