I just changed from using TVE2 (built in TV Engine) to TVServer using MP 1.0.2. I did a clean install. Everything installed correctly, I downloaded MS SQLServer 2005 during the install. It loaded correctly accepted the password and I was able to open TVServer Configuration, scan my channels and preview them.

However, when I try to access MyTV in MP GUI I get a message:
"Please specify the IP address or host name of the master TV Service. Current Setting: [computername]"
where [computername] is the name of my computer, which is what it says it should be in TVServer Configuration

If I reenter my computer name, or enter localhost, I get a dialog box with the message:
"Unable to connect to the TVServer | Connected to the database | All IP ports appear to be fine"

If I enter the IP address 127.0.0.1 it tries to connect to TVServer, but responds with the error:
    "Connection to TVService lost"

I am using Vista SP1. I do not have a network, my computer is a member of Workgroup.

I spent 8 hours solid trying to work this out. Reinstalled several times. And several days subsequently testing. I tried all the 'fixes' I could find in the forums (and there are a lot of varied cases of this problem!)

I tried installing MS Loopback Adapter, but the instructions say to enter an IP address of 127.0.0.1 which Vista would not accept. It said 127.0.0.1 was reserved!

The only workaround that worked for me was to add my computername to the hosts file in C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc like this:

    127.0.0.1 localhost [computername]

However, I do not know much about networking and I do not know the implications of this workaround, although it does not appear to cause any problems. I am grateful to Singer68 for at least finding this fix. However, I would like to be able to configure and use TVServer properly.

The only error messages I can find that seem to be relevant are:
    1. In MP error.log [ERROR][TvClient-Radio: HeartBeat transmitter thread]: TVHome: Error occured in constructor: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host
    2. In TVServer error.log [MPMain]: RemoteControl - Error checking connection state
    3. In Vista System Event log: Event ID 15016 Unable to initialize the security package kerberos for server side
    authentication.
    4. In Vista Applications Event log: Warning: The configuration of the AdminConnection\TCP protocol in the SQL instance SQLEXPRESS is not valid.

    My log files are attached.

Since TVE2 is being discontinued and a lot of single seat users will be switching to TVServer, I am hoping they will not have to go through the nightmare I have. I hope this problem is unique to my system. But if it is not, I am happy to test things you suggest to try and make the installation easier.

Did you ever get this working phoenixsingh?

I have now tried the Microsoft Loopback Adaptor, following instructions as outlined in https://forum.team-mediaportal.com/newcomers-forum-240/msloopback-device-singleseat-users-51028/

With the Loopback Adaptor installed I can open TV but I get an error saying "Connection to TVServer lost" and MP freezes. I get no error messages in Mediaportal logs or system logs. The only error message I get is in TVServer error.log:
"RemoteControl - Error checking connection state"

I can only get TVServer to work by adding my computer name to Hosts file, but after using that for a while, I can confirm that does cause problems. So, after installing the loopback adapator, I added
192.168.2.1 localhost [computername] to the hosts file (see my previous post) and it works perfectly.

I do not know why I need to add my computername as a localhost in the hosts file, but it seems I do!

The only reason I suspect this may be happening, is a windows service is disabled for network discovery, certainly never put 192.168.2.1 in the hosts file.
Did you install a version of sql yourself or did MP do it, plus you really needed to be in a admin account and "run as administrator" to get the correct permissions enabled for the auto installer.

Hey Ray, thanks so much for the help. I have been trying for months to get TVServer working properly and nothing I do seems to work (other than adding my computer name to 127.0.0.1 in the hosts file which I don't like)

Network discovery was off. I use Vista Ultimate SP1, and Loopback adapater automatically created a new network connection identified as public network with network discovery off. Vista sets it automatically on for private networks and off for public ones. I'm not sure why the loopback adapator needs to be a public network.

Mp installed SQL, though I installed the SQL Server management studio express myself. I am running in an admin account, though I did not "run as administrator" anywhere.

In any case, I removed 192.168.2.1 from the hosts file and turned Network Discovery on but did not fix the problem. I still get the same errors. I also tried changing it to a private network, same deal. I did configure Windows Firewall to allow Network Discovery and MediaPortal.

Of course, I can preview channels in TVServer Config, and the TV.log actually states "video and audio are seen after 1.5555645 seconds" NOT!

I am so completely lost at this point I have no idea what to try next.

I'm having the same problem. I'm running the TV Server in my private network at 192.168.2.3 and i'm trying to access it from a different computer which has only the client of Mediaportal installed.
I'm also getting the message (after about 30 sec. Timeout) "Please specifiy the address or hostname[...]".
I am able to connect to the MySQL Server from within the Net, i'm able to ping the host and I'm able to access files. Everything works exept Mediaportal.

What could be the reason for this problem?

I've been running MP just fine on my Vista machine for ages, but after I tried upgrading to v1.1.0 today, I have spent the last 12 hours dealing with this problem. I've now done several fresh installs, and system restores, and I finally decided to try the hosts file thing... How in the world adding my hostname to the hosts file fixes it, I do not know, but it does.

This is very frustrating, and I'm still completely baffled as to how this hosts file change helps.

Can anyone shed any light on this!?

Can't connect to TVserver and Database

I think I've found an solution on the problem. I changed the server name from computername to IP-adress in the Gentle.config files. You have to change on both Mediaprtal and TV-server on the Server and on the Mediaportal file on the Client. It works direcly after restarting on both PC's.

    Kind regards

RLinSweden - thanks for the tip. Could you give a little more instruction?
Where did you change your computername in Gentle.config? My computer name only appears here:
    Code:
     <DefaultProvider name="SQLServer" connectionString="Password=MediaPortal;Persist Security Info=True;User ID=sa;Initial Catalog=MpTvDb;Data Source=[B][computername][/B]\SQLEXPRESS;Connection Timeout=300;" />
    Is that where you mean?

...change on both Mediaprtal and TV-server on the Server
I can find Computer name in MP Config - Television - TV Client - TV Server Hostname, but where do I change it in TV Server?

I am a single seat user and know nothing about networking! So thanks for any help you can provide.

Can't connect to TVserver and Database

    Hi again Dadeo,

I'm running Vista and On the serverPC at ProgramData/Team MediaPortal/ Mediaportal/Gentle.config there is a line:
    <DefaultProvider name="MySQL" connectionString="Server=192.168.0.197;Database=MpTvDb;User ID=root;Password=MediaPortal;charset=utf8;Connection Timeout=300;" /> <!--

and at ProgramData/Team MediaPortal/TVServer/Gentle.config there is a line:
    <DefaultProvider name="MySQL" connectionString="Server=192.168.0.197;Database=MpTvDb;User ID=root;Password=MediaPortal;charset=utf8;Connection Timeout=300;" />

Youn also need to change on the ClientPC at ProgramData/Team MediaPortal/MediaPortal/Genle.config on the line:
    <DefaultProvider name="MySQL" connectionString="Server=192.168.0.197;Database=MpTvDb;User ID=root;Password=MediaPortal;charset=utf8;Connection Timeout=300;" /> <!--

Hope this will give some light

    Kind Regards
