Some files are exhibiting tearing @ 60hz so I am trying to make use of the very handy feature to have MP change the refresh rate to see if that helps. However, it doesn't seem to do anything at all for me. I have it enabled as well as the optional "Force" checkbox. I know my display supports 24 and 50hz so I'm not sure what the deal is. I would really love to have this working using the normal Windows API calls and not using nVidia profiles or other external apps like Powerstrip. Is there any log or anything that would show why this isn't doing anything? Applicable HTPC specs are to the left.

I have doubts as to whether this will even help as this only affects some files and they have the same frame rates. What else would cause tearing in some files and not others?

Tearing won't be prevented by changing the framerate as far as I know. Excact framerate can remove studder mostly seen when the image pans left/right or right/left.

Are your system specs correct? I mean, Vista? Is Aero activated?

Yeah, they are correct. Aero is not enabled. I come from a gaming background so when I see tearing I think v-sync but I dont know if/how that applies to MP playback.

I'm pretty sure that Vista needs Aero to use HW-acceleration, try and enable this.

Yes, thats true. AERO needs to be enabled under Vista to allow video playback to sync to v-sync signal. If that doesn't help then it means most likely that your display/tv doesn't really support the refreshrate you are using and causes the tearing.

Hmmm I can't imagine why the Aero desktop effects would be required for such things as that would be retarded on Microsoft's part... Oh wait... I will try it when I get home.

The TV certainly syncs to common rates like 24 50 and 60. I'm wondering of it's the damned nvidia drivers. They keep assuming I am hooked up to an NTSC TV and switching to 59hz. The TV is certainly capable of acting like a 60hz monitor as I have done it many times with other systems. Id love to update the driver version but anything newer causes the video to freak out when connected to my Onkyo receiver. It looks like how you'd imagine a faulty analog connection to look as you fiddled with the cable. It is definitely not the cable though. It is only the newer drivers.

Tourettes is correct - you need Aero turned on, not for the desktop effects but because it enables 'desktop composition' mode and syncing of video rendering to vsync.

The nVidia drivers/Vista will only use refresh rates they think the TV supports i.e. the rates available in the nVidia control panel.

Which driver version are you running - 185.xx seem to have problems.

Try running Moninfo - EnTech Taiwan | Utilities | Monitor Asset Manager - and see what it reports about supported refresh rates.

AERO definitely resolved the tearing issues so :D for that.

The refresh rates still don't change but without all the awful tearing, it is MUCH less of an issue. I tried messing with the custom resolutions in the nvidia control panel but none of them resulted in a viewable image. I am not sure what the deal is there because my PS3 is set to output BDs @ 24 hz and it does. The info button on the TV confirms it is "1920 x 1080 @ 24hz." I will have to give that app a try when I get home and see what it says. I am using the drivers that came with the board as the newer 185 series jacks up the display when it goes through the receiver.
