Codec causing stutter? (1 Viewer)

Hi need some help trouble shooting what I think is a codec problem.

Currently using TV3 (same problem on TV2 though) and MPV\MPA codec for watching TV.

My system specs are as in my profile.

I can recorda tv program and it'll play fine, along with live TV, however sometimes recordings will stutter every minute or so, when this happens I can close MP and play it in media player and it'll stutter at the exact same time stamps, so you'd assume it was the recording\tv signal right.

But..I can play the recording, without stutters, perfectly fine in VLC. So it must be a codec probelm?

I've tried the Dscaler and Cyberlink codecs without luck, what should be my next step?

I'm thinking the easiest thing would be to figure out why the recording won't play in media player?

I have a similar situation too with MP. Some recordings will stutter or pause after they've been recorded, but its not a constant thing: some recordings are fine while others can have 2 or more stutters in a given show.

MP uses windows media player for playback of content, thats why the videos stutters at the same spot in MP and in WMP.

Im not yet ready to issue a bug report on this because I dont know if its an isolated case, or something wide spread. I believe it does have something to do with the codecs, because if I use the video editor plugin to convert the dvr-ms file to a regular mpeg file, the stuttering will be gone - its like the conversion process will simply re-write all the frames and strip out the dvr-ms headers and footers.

Have you tried other codecs other than the default installed ones? (nvidia decoder and the GPL MPEG1/2 decoder come to mind here...)

It would help if you could post your system configurations. TV cards especially would be useful.

I just tried Purevideo and same problem.

How do you know what codec Media Player is using?

Is it possible the video file is corrupt from a weak signal and WMP simply can't figure it our whereas VLC can? that would explain why re-encoding it works?

Out of interest are you using an onboard Nvidia SATA controller? As I'm half convinced its something to do with the HDD, dont ask me why, gut instinct or somethig like that, gonna try a PATA drive when I can find one.

You can tell what codec WMP uses by loading a video into Graphedit. whatever default graph gets built when you load the file, thats what codecs and filters will be used to display the media.

I am using an onboard SATA controller, but its not an nvidia - its provided by Uli

    Uli M1689 northbridge
    Uli M5285 SATA controller (onboard)

I'll have to try one of the videos that pauses in VLC and see if it also skips in there too.

Well my WMP uses MPV and MPA codecs which explains why WMP also has trouble playing the files!

Am I right in saying that VLC uses its own codecs

    Hi Robomonkey,

I have had your same problem in my previous PC with asus a8n vm-csm and geforce6150 onboard graphic, later I upgrade to separately graphic card (ati x1300) and I solved the problem. I read on other forum that geforce 6150 has problem with vmr-9 and deinterlacing. Try to upgrade your video card.

These are the most common causes and ways to resolve stuttering. I will attach a batch file later that will unregister the mpa/mpv decoders, which I find cause more harm than good

    Shock, any particular reason.
