Not positive this is the place to post this, but I've been using some software called GraphRenderer I found on the thegreenbutton.com.
The great thing about this is not only will it convert a dvr-ms to a mpeg2 complient video, it will remove the commercials in a recorded television program.
It is still in it's alpha stage, but the newest version works really well and has a simple GUI interface at this point. It is being developed towards MCE, but right now is completely standalone...

Make sure you go through to the last page as the updates are scattered throughout. The lastest update was last night (4/22/05).
babgVant is pumping out updates as fast as he can. Each a easier to use than the last.
