I've run into similar problems. Like you, I have:
1. Installed VC++ 2008 Express, with updates
2. Installed VC# 2008 Express
3. Installed Tortoise SVN + latest (HEAD) revision of MediaPortal, TvEngine3, DirectX etc.
4. Tried to install DirectX SDK Feb 2010 (got S1010 error, so installation was incomplete)

I think the wiki page needs updating, as the current MP releases are built from Visual Studio 2008 versions, not 2005.

I'd be happy to update the wiki, but do not know which of the required applicaitons to install to get a working compilation in the first place (due to the wiki being out of date)

Questions (for the successful developers):
1. Are the 2008 Express editions adequate, or are the full-blown (paid-for) editions required to compile MP and Directshow source files?
2. What applications/versions need to be installed to successfully compile the current versions of MP?
3. Is the order of installation important?
