Comskip & UK TV Channels (1 Viewer)

Hi,

I have recently started using Comskip and so far the only channel it works on is Five. It works like a charm when I have recorded something off Five, but it doesn't seem to work for any other commercial channel.

Is it my setup, or do other broadcasters not transmit the data Comskip uses??

Hello mate,

Channels don't send data as such for commercials - ie Comskip does not work in this way.

Comskip scans the channel picture being viewed for certain characteristics (eg audio change, black frames, no channel logo, cue marks, etc) to detect if a commercial break is going to begin or end. Hence its very hit and miss as each country (and each channel) is slightly different.

You can configure/tweak comskip (there are loads and loads of options) but I doubt believe anyone has had great success with UK channels (as each is different - where as some countries have standards for all the channels when commercials start or stop - the UK aren't too stringent on this). As you can imagine channels don't want you to be able to detect/skip commercials.

Sounds reasonable... I was just confused I'm really impressed with it when it works on something I recorded, otherwise I just skip forwards on the remote.
