Sorry, I'm confused

If the replacement driver is now obselete, how do I go about configuring Mediaportal to work with the MCE remote/keyboard in Vista?
My Mediaportal installation, seems to have coincided with your latest findings.
How about a quick run-through of making the MCE remote/keyboard work with Mediaportal in Vista and making it sticky ;p

Is IRServerSuite the answer?

What I had so far;

Install Vista replacement driver
Install MCE replacement plugin
Install MPTray

For all your work so far, I salute you

The latest test versions of the MCE Replacement Plugin (from the forum thread) and IR Server Suite support the default eHome driver in Windows Vista. And because you can make the eHome driver behave like the Replacement driver the Replacement driver is now obsolete.

Having said that you can still use the replacement driver if you want. It's still supported.

    Does that answer your question?

    Cheers,

So lemme get this straight ;p

    Thanks for the reply Aaron,

So in order to launch MP and control it in Vista (x32), I need to install the MP Control Plugin (i'm presuming this is the same as MCE Replacement Plugin?(OK, just re-read the IRServerSuite.chm and yes this plugin is the equivalent of the MCE Replacement Plugin)), the IR Server and Tray Lancher from the IRServerSuite?
Does the IRServer automatically halt the main MCE HID driver, or do I still have to disable that and the HidIr service and then restart the HidIr service?
Assuming the above is the correct method, then the MCE remote that I have (Philips) should just work? Or do I have to some mapping?
Sorry if this sounds a bit dumb ;p

Yep, MP Control Plugin is the equivalent of MCE Replacement Plugin.

You need IR Server, it makes the connection to the IR device and provides access to it for all the plugins and apps.

Tray Launcher is like MPTray/ReplacementTray, but you could also use Translator for this. Translator will let you control all other areas of your pc too.

As for the HidIr service... If you disable it you can remap the arrow keys, etc...

You can disable/enable it in the Advanced area of the MCE device configuration inside IR Server.

I guess I could make the plugin terminate the process when it starts ... that would make everyone's setup the same and prevent the sort of "Remove replacement driver buttons" stuff that came up with MCE Replacement Plugin.

The remote should "just work"... The only thing you need to set up is the MP Control plugin, just make sure you tell it what sort of remote you have ... I'll be making a change soon so that MP Control plugin auto-detects the remote and sets it up for you ... but that's still a week or two away...

    Cheers,

    Can't get it to work

    Hey Aaron,

I've installed IR Server, MP Control Plugin and TrayLauncher.
The first time I tried it, it seemed to work, then IR Server crashed.
I have set it to start with windows, which it does.
If I press the 'Advanced' button in 'Microsoft MCE Configuration\Basic', it does nothing. I have had this working before, it's where you enable/disable HidIr, right?
I've attached my log for you.
    Thanks again mate

    Strange ...

Can you give me some details about your setup ?

Are you running XP or Vista? 32 or 64 bit?

Are you logged in as an administrator or limited user?

    More info

    Ok, Aaron,

I just removed and reinstalled IRServerSuite.
I pressed the green Start button and it launched Windows Media Center.
I quit that and launched Mediaportal and up and down worked, then IRServer crashed in the background.
Prior to that, I was able to get 'Advanced' in 'Microsoft MCE Configuration\Basic' though I made no changes.
I also noticed, that by default, only the 'Transmit' checkbox is checked against the MCE Remote, however if I click 'Auto-Detect' both are then checked.
    Here is the text from Vista's crash handler;
    Description:
    Stopped working

    Problem signature:
    Problem Event Name: CLR20r3
    Problem Signature 01: irserver.exe
    Problem Signature 02: 1.0.3.4
    Problem Signature 03: 470124bb
Problem Signature 04: Microsoft MCE Transceiver
    Problem Signature 05: 1.0.3.4
    Problem Signature 06: 470125ef
    Problem Signature 07: 100
    Problem Signature 08: b7
    Problem Signature 09: System.ComponentModel.Win32
    OS Version: 6.0.6000.2.0.0.768.3
    Locale ID: 2057

Again, I have included the log

There are a couple of issues at play here.

    Firstly:
The XBCDRCReceiver detection routine is crashing stopping the ir server from detecting of other receiver devices which is why you only had the transmit checkbox checked initially.

    Secondly:
It seems there are Windows MediaCenter services running that are interfering with IR Server.

It could be that the interfering services (or my other idea is a security permission problem) are crashing the mce device interfacing code, the "System.ComponentModel.Win32" in the problem signature suggests to me (I could be wrong) that a win32 exception is crashing the ir server ... I would guess that is in the mce device interfacing code.

Anyway, I'll try to get it fixed tomorrow, so keep an eye on this thread and I'll post back when I have something for you.

Thanks for the detailed info, it makes this a lot easier.

    Cheers,
