I've been using mediaportal for over 2 years now, and this is the first problem i've had that I really think is worth posting about. (normally searching has yielded me either answer, or confirmation that a fix is incoming).
Recently, I moved to a smaller htpc case, and decided to go silent. So I switched to a laptop drive, which in black & white really slowed down my browsing speed in moving pictures (and videos). With the rapid backdrop changes, etc. So I used a product called ramdisk plus, and installed media portal on there, and briefly tried to move the config files over, and after running into some random crash problems gave up (that was many months ago, and I was using SVN releases). With the release of 1.0.2 I started trying again.
What i've tracked down is that for whatever reason, if the thumbnails / backdrops are on a ramdisk (ramdisk.tk or ramdisk plus, and I assume any other ramdisk product on the market) Within a few seconds or minutes mediaportal will halt completely. Its always on a getting from memory line in the log file.
If I move the thumbs back to disk I have no issue. I have swapped the ram in the box, and I have run memtest86 overnight. The DB's and other stuff can sit on ramdisk no problem. I also have the log files on ramdisk as well (Everything that would be under programdata). I tried moving my mediaportal install back to hard disk, and the problem still persisted.
Not sure whats causing this, If no one has any ideas, I guess i'll delve into the memory caching component and see how it might interfere with a ramdisk / vice versa.
Thanks.
