    Hi,
Here is a device to control an HTPC with a TV remote controle by using HDMI CEC.
    It's possible to control XBMC.
Is it possible to control Mediaportal?
french link : Pulse-Eight USB/CEC adapter : piloter XBMC avec la tlcommande de votre TV
english link: Pulse-Eight. Control your TV from XBMC, or vice versa! USB - CEC Adapter
    Interesting no?
    :)

Isn't this also possible using winlirc? The wiki states that it is supported for Mediaportal.
I've messed around with some random IR remote I found, a simple circuit and winlirc. It worked like a charm. I suppose such a circuit would not be too expensive (mine was made by a friend of mine.)
I never tried it with MP, though, it was before I found out about this awesome software. I now use a MCE remote.
