what should be the average cpu usage for viewing one tv channel ?

i'm watching a channel on a remote client, the server is doing nothing else but serving this channel and i getting between 10 - 20% cpu usage. it's also using 38mb mem usage.

seems a little high to me.. as if i happen to have 2 clients running and 1 recording, then that could be 60% cpu usage.

server is
Windows 2003 server
AMD Ahtlon 3200+
512Mb RAM
tvserver build 12695
Hauppauge Nova-T 500

Nope, not even recording dvb-s2 hdtv causes more than ~ 20% cpu load - think of it more like a "base level". I bet your I/O subsystem will be the bottleneck for serving many clients long before the cpu maxes out.

so 10-20% for one stream is about normal then ?
and no matter what i throw at it it should never get beyond 20% (ie mutliple liveTV viewing and recordings at same time) ?

10-20% cpu usage with one channel sounds abit high. I have usualy 1-2% (and some small "spikes" 5%) cpu usage with tv engine when timeshifting one SD DVB channel.

One possibility is that DVB cards drivers are some what cpu hungry and are causing the high load. Could you check with yask manager how the 10-20% usage is divided between kernel and user space time?

    tourettes,

Are you using a recent SVN? I used to have around ~10% on a Semprom 1600, but with SVN12760 i have almost 50% for a single channel analog (Hauppauge 500PVR) and almos 100% for 2 channels.

Yes, both Rev12769 & Rev12765 have similar cpu usage.

Ok, ended up to be a combination of the AV and Firewall software in the machine.

After reinstalling Comodo Firewall the CPU utilization dropper from ~45% per channel to ~15%, wich is close to what I had before.

AV (Avast) was making the server to reboot. After replacing it with AVG everything is fine.
