Customizable menus:

A way to make your own main menu and maybe submenus:

I find this a very useful idea - it would be hard to implement it?

I'm about to build a htpc and my point is to make it as much simple and usable as it can be. I found mediaportal to be the best that fit my needs and with the new xface skin that makes it really amazing, but if it had customizable menus, that 'll make it a wonder!

I think that if i could change at least the main menu it 'll make a big difference - maybe there could be like some kind of shortcuts pointing to things (like a specified plugin or to an external program like browser, etc.) that a user can set...
At this point anyone could make a menu that fits for them.
For example i could make the menu look like this:

-my videos
-my music
-my pictures
-weather
-RSS news
-email
-external web browser
-advanced
(i can put all the stuf that i don't need so often in here)
----settings
----...
.
.
.

I don't know how exactly mediaportal is connected with the skin, but if there will be an issue with the thumbnails (icons) next to the custom menu entries, it could just use a universal picture or even beter - let the user set it.

Hope anything of this helps.
...so how hard will be to implement if possible?

This feature request also refers to this thread (please take a look):

I also found this right now:

-does this mean that the work is already in progress? ... if so, sorry for posting this thread...

Well this is already the case... Exactly how MP works already!
All the stuff you dont need you can put in my plugins...
in the MP config you can select exactly what plugins you want to apear in the Home screen and what under my plugins...
Just rightclick on a item under plugins and select basic home or my plugins.

That only works for the regular home though and not the basic home.

It would be nice if you could choose a 2 tier basic home screen

RC2 didnt have the plugin to customize the menu. RC3 has it but is very limited, i.e. u can only hide some entry and change the order.
You CANNOT rename the entries, or edit all the tree like above poster wants.

I'm with you - just settling in to MP and discovering lots of customizable features, but the main menus aren't... I would love to have an external music player launched when you click on My Music in the main menus...

The customizable menus are beeing added in MP2.

MP1 is in a feature freeze so I doubt you will ever see it there unless a plugin is developed. There is a .dll file that allows you to do this to some extent, I believe you can find it in the Monochrome skin thread(3 of these dll's are also supplied with the skin). If you combine this with the multishortcut plugin you might be able to make a menu where you click 'listen' and then get a new menu where you can click a icon to launch your external music player. This requires some .xml editing I think, and I haven't done it myself so I'm not 100% sure it would work.
