Do I need to use de-interlacing?
HDTV looks great on my setup, but i'm allways open for making it look better. I am using NVidia Pure Video codecs, and I noticed in the configuration of them in MP, I can set deinterlace to "Smart" (I read somewhere this was a "Good" thing)

I did notice though in MP general TV setup, the only options are like None, Best, Bob or the like, No mention of Smart. Which settings trump what?

The - None, bob, weave and best - settings in mediaportal are used to configure deinterlacing through directx, in most cases giving you a software deinterlacer. the deinterlace settings in the actual purevideo filter (or any other filter like MPV) will use the features of that filter for deinterlacing, even hardware support if it exists.

so generally speaking, the filter deinterlace settings trump the MP deinterlace settings.

Just leave it on automatic and it will de-interlace as necessary!

    :D

De-interlacing is a "good thing", and makes the picture look better.

So by "Automatic" are you referring to the "Smart" mode of the Nvidia Pure Video codec?

Okay - So I could have de-interlace in MP Setup as "None", but then go into the codec setting for pure-video and set it to smart? That would get me setup correctly?

Leave the Purevideo codec settings on "automatic" if you only want to deinterlace regular TV. The options you have in the pure video codec deinterlacing settings are: automatic, video, film and smart.

The first control is marked De-interlace Control and has the following options: Automatic, Film, Video and Smart. Automatic mode simply uses the DVD flags to determine what the source is and applies the appropriate algorithms based on the flags.

The Film and Video modes tell the DVD decoder to treat all content as 24 fps or 30 fps content respectively. Smart mode is the option you'll want to set and it uses both flags as well as NVIDIA's own algorithms to determine the best de-interlacing to apply.

If you want to apply deinterlacing settings to ALL videos then use smart. it will use more CPU to do so, and some content doesnt need to be deinterlaced. When I was using purevideo i just used automatic as I only wanted TV content to be deinterlaced.

According to someething i read a couple of days ago, Automatic is now the best choice - it used to be Smart, but they changed a few things in the latest drivers.

"when using the ForceWare 91.47 and newer along with the latest PureVideo decoder builds Automatic is now the best setting. With the new drivers and the Automatic setting a GeForce 7 series card should now score a very high 123 on the HQV DVD Benchmark test!"
