How does something just simply stop functioning correctly, even when configuration/tweaking is totally frozen. Chalk it up to hardware or whatever, but this is the most unreliable piece of software I've ever encountered. I switched from mythTV because I wanted to try something new and I had a win7 license burning a hole in pocket. I will say that there were times of frustration getting mythTV up and running, but #$%^, once I got it going, I would bet my paycheck that it would not miss a recording no matter what. Just as the sun rises each day, mythTV would have my scheduled recordings waiting for me.

Mediaportal on the other hand, is another story. I never know if a recording is going to be there. It has some nice features (moving pictures is THE killer app), and I like how it lays out the programs in human readable form, but the configuration is a mess, the stability is %$#@ with all the out of memory errors (I have 4 gigs or ram), forcing me to reboot nightly just to keep the system running smoothly, and now all the missed recordings. For ^%$#@ sake, there are 3 tuner cards in my system and it still misses recordings? I'm baffled!

I don't know, I guess the devs do this because its their hobby and they find it fun, so I thank them for that, but &^%$#@ it is frustrating to have to tinker with this thing nonstop because things just stop working. Before you say, "why don't you fix it", I'll simply retort, because I don't want to. I'll save my time and purchase one of the commercial PVR's and I suppose with doing so, I've also purchases a valid reason to bitch.

So in leaving, I'll rate mediaportal as thus:
* eyecandy factor: 5
* recording reliability: 0
* plugins: 2
* filesystem layout: 5
* website messiness: 5
* ease of use: 4
* ease of configuration: 3
* likeliness of configuration staying stable: 0
* chance of memory leaks: 5
* chance of random crap being recorded over and over and over: 5
* cost: 1 (time is money)
* Moving Pictures: 10 (get these guys on your dev team now if they aren't already)

Cheers.

    Woww ... had some bad luck ehh :(

    My system is no where near as grunty as yours and only uses plain old Windows Xp Pro
    * TV Server hasnt been rebooted in over a month
    * TV Client (also XP) only gets turned off each night to save power.
    * In the 2 years Ive had it going the only time Ive missed a recording was when we had a power cut.
    * Never had it record somehting which I didnt tell it. Mind you, Im using 4therecord, but pretty sure that doesn't matter.
    * Moving Pictures and My TV Series are soooo cool ... and stable as.

    I know it doesnt help your problem, but for me 1.0.2 is as good as it can possibly get for me.

    Maybe the missed recordings is due to your EPG?

    Gidday,

    Just to backup what my fellow New Zealand member "Thekiwi" has stated, Media Portal really is a great package and personally I had a few teething problems as well over the first few months, but the support through this website is fantastic and I'm sure there are many willing people who will help you through your setup via the forums.

    I had a number of missed recordings, however I was on Vista and had Powerscheduler installed (a standard plugin) and the machine did not wakeup to record. I installed Vista SP2 and all those problems went away, but I see you are on Windows 7. You mention 3 TV tuner cards - I wonder whether there could be conflicts or the missed recordings are because one of the tuners is not right - check each is tuned - I'm assuming 3 dual tuners so 6 in total?? Also, check the EPG as Thekiwi suggested.

    I would also try re-installing MP from scratch and use the latest stable version 1.0.0.2 - make sure you do a complete uninstall and follow the manual to the letter. If I was to do a complete install, I have found this thread has had great reviews around codecs and would use this:

    https://forum.team-mediaportal.com/...s-dxva-ready-h-264-vc-1-a-44614/index532.html

    Again, there is a good following with Media Portal and great support to get you up and running.

    Regards

    Graham

    Is there any logging available of this problem? This could tell a lot in most cases.

    Also there is no indication which version you are using.

    For most people MP is a great piece of software but some HW / SW configurations can cause trouble, and of course there are bugs which we are here for to solve.

    Going for my 4th year using MediaPortal....this is how I would rate it (out of 10) honestly:

    * eyecandy factor: 9 (I love "Black-Glass")
    * recording reliability: 10
    * plugins: 10
    * filesystem layout: 10
    * website messiness: 7 (could be improved)
    * ease of use: 10
    * ease of configuration: 7 (3year ago I would have given it a 3)
    * likeliness of configuration staying stable: 10
    * chance of memory leaks: 1 (happened 3times on downloaded SVN's )
    * chance of random crap being recorded over and over and over: 0 (has always recorded what I wanted)
    * cost: 10 (Without MediaPortal I would have had to spend money on medication to keep me happy)

    just let me apologize. Not all us users in the States are like this....

    :D

    he apparently couldn't wait for the update, nor for any discussion of his issues.

    btw... I've never run out of diskspace with TV recordings ... And I've never missed a recording. I've never had to reboot TV-Server, but frequently have a crash in MePo... don't know why or can't isolate occurances to one action, too late to find out .... waiting for the next stable release and give it another go.

    then again.. I'm still using 1.0.2

    I've been using pc's since the 70's and have had my share of crashes and frustrations ... but I know better than to moan about sw that is still under development. If one wants something to work well, then do all you can to support the dev team.

    What the hell does this have to do with me being American? Don't you have some sheep to "tend" to?

    I have a ton of logs, but I've narrowed it down to the TVServer component. I'm very satisfied with the playback capabilities and I will probably look for something else to handle the backend recordings.

    Two things:

    1) we don't have any developers on NA - so the tv side is just done blindly for ATSC
    2) michael moore might have been right

    btw. sheeps don't like me. I tried.
