How does something just simply stop functioning correctly, even when configuration/tweaking is totally frozen. Chalk it up to hardware or whatever, but this is the most unreliable piece of software I've ever encountered. I switched from mythTV because I wanted to try something new and I had a win7 license burning a hole in pocket. I will say that there were times of frustration getting mythTV up and running, but #$%^, once I got it going, I would bet my paycheck that it would not miss a recording no matter what. Just as the sun rises each day, mythTV would have my scheduled recordings waiting for me.
Mediaportal on the other hand, is another story. I never know if a recording is going to be there. It has some nice features (moving pictures is THE killer app), and I like how it lays out the programs in human readable form, but the configuration is a mess, the stability is %$#@ with all the out of memory errors (I have 4 gigs or ram), forcing me to reboot nightly just to keep the system running smoothly, and now all the missed recordings. For ^%$#@ sake, there are 3 tuner cards in my system and it still misses recordings? I'm baffled!
I don't know, I guess the devs do this because its their hobby and they find it fun, so I thank them for that, but &^%$#@ it is frustrating to have to tinker with this thing nonstop because things just stop working. Before you say, "why don't you fix it", I'll simply retort, because I don't want to. I'll save my time and purchase one of the commercial PVR's and I suppose with doing so, I've also purchases a valid reason to bitch.
So in leaving, I'll rate mediaportal as thus:
* eyecandy factor: 5
* recording reliability: 0
* plugins: 2
* filesystem layout: 5
* website messiness: 5
* ease of use: 4
* ease of configuration: 3
* likeliness of configuration staying stable: 0
* chance of memory leaks: 5
* chance of random crap being recorded over and over and over: 5
* cost: 1 (time is money)
* Moving Pictures: 10 (get these guys on your dev team now if they aren't already)
Cheers.
