Would it be possible to add some sort of dvd backup function to MP?
There is one built into my movies http://www.mymovies.name/

This would be a great function if it could select the main track off the disc and then compress it to xvid and download the stuff from the IMDB!!

What do you think? Is it feasable without keeping the CPU busy for hours?

I am sorry to say I don't see this happening in the project. The devs here are very cautious when it comes to legal things like this and we all know DVD backup is a sticky issue in a lot of places around the world. Secondly I am not sure this is feasible there are already some great software titles out there for DVD backup and there is no point re-inventing the wheel. While I agree it would be nice but unless someone wants to write an unofficial and unsupported plug-in to do so I don't believe the cost / benefit ratio really justifies the troubles and problems it will naturally bring.

The best think to do would simply be to write a plugin that allowed this only for unencrypted DVDs. This should be safe enough as it doesnt circumvent any copy protection.

Most DVDs are encrypted however, and depending on your location it might or might not be illegal to circumvent this protection. There exists multiple programs that run in the background and decrypt the DVD on the fly so that it appears unprotected to programs such as the plugin i mentioned above.

In this manner no one can blame MP, and people who either dont care(which is understandable, i never understood why i shouldnt be allowed to backup my DVDs!), or live in a place where its allowed to circumvent copy protection for backup purposes could use one of these background services.

I dont really think its worth the bother though, i prefer to just use a seperate program.
