DVD Backup (1 Viewer)

Has anyone thought about possibly making a DVD backup plugin? I like to store all of my DVDs in xvid format on my server so I can watch them whitout having to put the DVD in. It would be great if there was a plugin that would take a DVD, rip it and then encode it to a user defined configuration. I think this would be possible using mencoder. Anyone have any thoughts on this? I would be willing to give it a try, but I don't have a lot of time at the moment.

There are many thoughts out there!
But none of these thoughts created a plugin, yet!

Still needs some development activities for that.

I had a alpha-plugin to back up a dvd to hdd for testing about a year ago.
But did not work that good, and got never finished.

But what you are talking about is not just backup (rip) a dvd to hdd, but also
compress to another format.
And, if I get you right, copy these files to another place (your server)
and I guess there would many additonial requests, that would come up with it (downloading imdb-info, cover etc...)?

The first thing would be finding a ripping software that's opensource not freeware!
And it needs to be checked if it's compatible with MP.
That would be a good start up.

Dont' know if mencoder can rip DVDs?

Mencoder can both rip DVD and encode to a different format. It is also open source.

I had tried making this type of plugin for Meedio back in the day, but never finished it. I don't think it would be to hard. You just need to be able to begin the mencoder process in the background after the user has defined the encoding settings.
