G'day guys,

I don't currently own a HD TV but in the future I wish to get a 22'' 1080p and a 1080p projector so want to "future proof" myself so to speak.

I currently rip all my DVDs to 1.1gb-2gb depending on the series using the defaults in handbrake. I rip to mkv encoding with H.264 - I do not touch anything else.

I originally downloaded a few tv series, all in 720p format.

Now, I know 720p > DVD however does the source change anything? Will the fact that the tv series were obviously TV Rips = lower quality. I just want to know if it's worth ripping all of my series or just keeping the 720p rips. I guess on the + side for the dvd rips it'd mean I'd lose the annoying tv station icon?

Views?

It depends on the source of the downloaded 720p TV rips, and the encoding method.

If the downloaded 720p TV rips come from HDTV and they have been encoded properly then the quality will be better than anything you can rip yourself via your DVD collection.

Also some HDTV stations broadcast upscaled SD video, so i am assuming it is an HD show broadcast on an HDTV channel.

Thanks. I thought that'd be the case.

I might just wait and see what the 720p stuff looks like on the 1080p TV. I intend on replacing most of my DVD content with BluRay stuff (the stuff that gets re-released anyway) so waiting might just be the best option anyway.
