Windows Version: Windows XP SP2
CPU Type: Pentium D 805 2.66Ghz
HDD: Maxtor 40GB ATA133
Memory: 896MB DDR2
Motherboard: MSI
Motherboard Chipset: ATI Xpress 200
Video Card: Onboard
Video Card Driver: Catalyst 6.8
Sound Card: Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 2 NX
Sound Card AC3: AC3/Coaxial out/optical out
1. TV Card: none

When I play a DVD with the My DVD function using the dscaler codec, the video and audio play fine, but the video looks washed out, ie lacking contrast, saturation, detail. I have tried changing my video overlay settings in the Catalyst control panel to no avail. Also, the same disc looks fine when I play it in PowerDVD externally, but the powerDVD codec in MP doesn't fix anything.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

This is because MediaPortal uses VMR9 which has a different colour scale to Overlay. PowerDVD is probably set to Overlay.

You can test this too in WMP10 via ticking the boxes for “Use video mixing renderer” and “use high quality mode” in Tools -> Options -> Performance, then the video (DivX, Xvid, DVD, etc.) is noticeably brighter than when it is in overlay mode. Blacks are now grey.

After searching around endlessly it would appear that there is a "workaround" for Nvidia and VMR9 with the new drivers:

I went from 61.77 to 91.31 and now everything looks ok! (no comments please about the warp jump in drivers!). Not sure what you can do with ATI...
