Hi, complete noob here. I am a bit confused about cable signals. Currently our cable provider sells us digital channels on our tvs equipped with their set top boxes but if we plug in a tv directly to the cable without the set top box we get way more channels. I'm thinking of cancelling the digital package with my provider and just going to connect the cable directly to the tvs. If I set up a mediaportal box or other homemade dvr to my tv can I get all the benifits of the dvr such as recording one thing while watching another and the ability to see what programming is on even if I don't subscribe to my providers digital package? I'm sorry if this doesnt make any sense I have a very limited understanding of how digital/non digital cable works and what role the set top box plays in it.

Hi and welcome 
You can use analogue cable w/a standard analogue TV-card, and get al the benefits of DVR. If you need/want to have more than one channel displayed/recorded at once, you need more TV-cards.
Guess you might be missing out on channels on digital cable (DVB-C) due to encryption and copyright stuff (fear of digital recording). I doubt you'll find a analogue STB (never heard of such) :-S
