In my search I came across Media Player Classic, which is able to do hardware assisted video decoding.What's even better, I can actually check if DXVA is used (Right Mouse -> Filters -> MPC Video Decoder -> DXVA Mode). I think the MPC code works really well, and we don't have to invest in a bulky powerDVD bundle.
