As stated in Google Code (http://code.google.com/p/fanart-handler/issues/detail?id=127):

I would like FH to offer the option to show 4:3 fanart cropped (up and down) instead of stretched, in case of widescreen skin. All of my pictures are taken in 4:3, and I would like not to see them with AR changed. In case of people in the photo, it's really noticeable and ugly. Now I must to manually crop them before storing in picture fanart directory.

I would guess that this is a skin issue. As the skin defines the image control for fanart to put the images in, you can change that to keep the aspect ratio.

Ok... Let me see what can be done using Basic Home editor of StreamedMP...

Probably (I think) not in the Editor, you would have to dig into the skin's XML directly (I guess).
