One thing I see every day, is that there are some questions, that were asked several times.
And every time the same answer was given and needs to be written again.
I think a kind of FAQ (frequently asked questions) is needed for MediaPortal.

This FAQ may avoid some questions and can be used as a reference, that can be link to when giving an answer.
So not every answer needs to be written again and again.
And it may help people who are new to MediaPortal and maybe some new info will come out, even for advanced users.

This post should be used in the first instance to collect these answers and questions.
After that it can become a sticky or whatever.

So if you think, you’ve got a question, that has been asked and answered several times,
please post here, and please post the answer, too.

    Just like this:

    Question:
What format does MediaPortal use to record a show?

    Anwser:
    MediaPortal records in dvr-ms.

    --------------

    Question:
Where can I change the default record format?

    Answer:
Record format cannot be changed. MediaPortal always records in dvr-ms.

    --------------

    Question:
Can I convert my recordings to another format?

    Answer:
Yes, you can either use my Burner plugin to convert to mpeg.
Or go within MediaPortal to myTV-> Recordings-> Compress
Here you can choose different output formats like wmv, mpeg or xvid.

    --------------

Maybe this will mix up with the Tips & Tricks section for some questions, but I think that’s okay.

If you got any additions to the questions or answers please post here.

And of course let’s collect a lot of good FAQs!

    Regards
    Ralph

    Thanks for the Links.
Never saw them before. And I'm not sure if newbies will find them easily and if they will help them a lot?
As I can see there are only 5 questions answered?

I think there a lot more, that come up again and again.

My intention was just to collect several questions in this post.
After that they can be stored wherever the admins like to.

But if you mean that there is no need for this, never mind.

    Regards

This points out the weak spots of any documentation for MP.
It REALLY needs to be hit in the face obvious and on the MAIN MENU.

The wiki is the way to go for the f.a.q. but I think it's a good idea to start collecting questions and answers in this thread and then transfer them to the wiki. Use this as a brainstorm session.

    So here is my contribution:

    question:
which video card do i need

    answer:
For good performance you need a directx 9 compatible card:
    NVidea : FX5200 or better
    ATi: Radeon 9550 or better.

Please note: for HD content you'll need a faster card than the above mentioned.

    question:
Does the Microsoft MCE keyboard work with MediaPortal

    answer:
    Yes it does.

    question:
The normal keys on my Microsoft MCE keyboard are not working.

    Answer:
You need this update from Microsoft to get it working.
    link to be added.

    question:
How can I get the Microsoft MCE remote working under XP Home

    Answer:
read this forum post: link to be added

Also the german MP website has a f.a.q. wich we could translate and add to the wiki.

Its directly on the mainpage of the wiki, also under "Support" but youre right, there are only 5 basics. Why dont you make 50 out of them? ,-)

Who said theres no need for it? Nobody will ever, just wanna give you the right place for it. There is always a need for documentation improvements. But devs cant do everything, they need also the help of the community. Just register an account on the wiki and edit and add there everything you want. The whole FAQ and more can be yours, its up to you ;)

All right, so let's go ahead.

    Question:
Where will my recordings be saved by default and
how can I change the folder for my recordings?

    Answer:
The default path is: My Documents\My Recordings

To change this go to Mediaportal configuration:
--> Television --> Capture Cards --> Select (your) Capture Card from the list --> Edit --> On the Tab "Capture card" you can determine the recording folder (if the card is activated for recordings)

    ----------------

If you know any questions that have been asked several times, please post here,
to get the FAQ up to 50 entries as [=high=] suggested... :)

    Wiki Links in Setup

I think there be links to the wiki from the MP Setup Program. So for each page in Setup place a link to the correct wiki page. Should help users find answers quicker.

In fact the same would be good for MP itself. From whichever screen you are in press a shortcut key and it opens the wiki page for the current screen in the browser plugin.

Do you mean like Microsoft had with many of its older Office products? Pres F1 and then the help would come up beside the office application. They had a customized help but really it could have been done with html and links, wel they did go that way then they have changd again. But even to add a search would be helpful with indexed keywords.
