I'm trying to setup ffdshow to improve my TV picture quality and also upscale the image to my displays 1680x1050 resolution... However, selecting 'keep original aspect ratio' in ffdshow always gives me a very squashed picture. Selecting 'no aspect ratio correction' forces me to choose an aspect ration in MP... each freeview channel broadcasts different sizes, and I alwas get confused to what the correct aspect ratio is...

Any ideas to how I can overcome this and get ffdshow to always display the correct aspect ratio? Or is this not possible and it must be done manually withing MP, in which case, which aspect ratio is the correct one to use when?

Thanks in advance!

i find i get best results when i dont' try and upscale to a set resolution eg, 1680x1050 as i get the odd different aspect ratio depending ont eh source as well, i find that if i have it resize by a set ratio 1.875 then it upscales most things like dvds to 1080 and preserves the aspect ratio as it times both horizontal and vertical values by that amount.

Right, so why does 1.875 upscale to 1080? I don't get that...

In newer builds you can upscale to only a specified Width (or was it Height?) and hte other gets auto-calculated, so you end up with a correct aspect ratio.

I find that gives me the best results as it maintains the AR (unlike upscale to a 16:9 res and fill the sides with black which is what the option to keep original aspect ratio does) which thus allows MP to use its zoom modes as intended.

yeah sorry my maths was a bit bad there i didnt' have the calculator at work
dvds at 720x576 - upscaled by 1.875 so the resolution after the ffdshow post processing comes to 1350x1080

Could you tell me how to configure mp to use ffdshow?
    I'm having some problems...
I tried to set nvidia pure video in tv section code and add ffdshow raw filter but in this way I have no images.... While if I set only nvidia pure video codec all is ok.
    What's your configuration?

Nightmare77: What would I multiply by to get 1680 x 1050? As 1680/720=2.333 & 1050/576=1.823... And by "resize by a set ratio" do you mean enter this number into the multiply by box under 'resize & aspect' in ffdshow?

Inker: How do you go about doing this? Is it done within ffdshow or MP?

Also, in MP Settings, what is the difference between ffdshow raw video filter & ffdshow Video Decoder? Which should be selected in the Activated Filters as atm I've got both selected...

it sort of depends on the existing size of the files you want to upscale, all i really wanted to do was upscale my PAL dvds which are 720x576 in resolution to make them 1080 so i have to times it by 1.875 which times both of those resolutions but it still keeps the correct aspect ratio cause it gets multiplied on both of them. So i guess if you wanted to resize to exactly 1680x1050 you may have to just specify that exact resolution for ffdshow to resize to , but bare in mind if you thats not exactly the same ratio for example.
    720/576 = 1.25 ratio
    1680/1050 = 1.6 ratio

So even tho its not the same its probably not that huge a difference that you will be able to tell noticably.

When i run it i run it with FFDshow video decoder, haven't tried raw filter as i'm not sure of the difference

I'm using the old FFDshow recommended on the MP homepage, but can I save my settings and import it to a new version, because it took a long time to adjust?
