Hi.

This is the first time I was looking at MovingPictures.
Most things seems to be easy to understand so far, but what I miss (maybe overlooked) is a folder view or smth. like that where you could browse thru the movies within a subfolder structure without them beeing in the movie database? This would be nice if you have some clips and movies which you don't want to add to the database, but can be viewed from within the plugin. I was assuming you could define a category which would simply be a link to a filesystem folder.

Did I miss anything or is MovPic not designed to work this way?

Regards,
grubi.

If you are using Moving Pictures 1.0 you can define a category structure to subdivide your collection based on the folder they reside in. There is an "Edit Categories" button in the config screen. There is no true folders view though, we leave that to MyVideos.

AW: Re: First time with MovingPictures

Thank's for your reply.

I was hoping there would be something like that to only have one plugin for movies making My Videos dispensable. Switching between two interfaces for that is not very user friendly.

If I understood you right every movie has to be in the database to be displayed by MovPic.

Cheers

Yes, Moving Pictures is 100% "database view" oriented. But many people divide their collection by folder then setup categories to mimic this in the database categories view. So what you want is probably possible assuming all your videos are Movies. If you are wanting to browse non-movie related content, that is simply not within the scope of Moving Pictures.

I don't see the problem, categories filter can do exactly that

    eg.
All Movies - Filter: Path Does not Contain = c:\othervideos\
Other videos - Filter: Path Contains = c:\othervideos\

    Hmm?

I also found the filters you mention however if I understood fforde correctly only movies are shown there which also have been added to the database.

Well, only videos that have been added to your database will be displayed. It's possible to manually add a video to your database with customized information. This is normally used for home videos, stuff like that. There also may be other scraper scripts floating around out there that pull data other than movie details. This configurations are not officially supported but Moving Pictures is flexible enough for it to work. Out of the box though, Moving Pictures will generally only import movie content.

Sorry I could have been much more clear.

Oh your right it has to be in the database, sorry didn't follow your question exactly.

Using moving pictures for videos that don't have a title/actors/genre etc... seems a bit pointless (to me) anyway, as the interface wouldn't really work with just random video files that didn't have fanart/dvd covers etc...

    You are correct.

However as I also have unstructured kind of video clips (beside movie collection) I hoped to make them visible in a special category which simply offers a folder view (similar to myVideo) so I only have to use one plugin.

I understood that Moving Picture is not designed for that kind of media (although I regret this).

    Thanks anyway.
