Just a heads up. I will be doing a presentation for some teachers and educational tech specialists for our state education department in about two weeks. The presentation centers around using VLC for video streaming over the network on the cheap, but when it comes time to show how to get content, guess what I will be recommending?

Yep: Mediaportal.

My plans are that these schools can use Mediaportal to record stuff from Cable In The Classroom (http://www.ciconline.org/home) and have it available for all classes using the VLC client (video conversion required). These shows can be kept for 1 year and this solution is cheap and just really cool with no tapes to lose.

Just a heads up because you may be getting some support requests because of it. If you like you can forward these teachers my way with the email in my profile.

I like the idea of moving MediaPortal into the education field, but why using MP to manage recordings that MP isn't going to play? While I love MediaPortal, it's primarily a front-end home entertainment app. Isn't this a bit of overkill?

Maybe, but its what I am familiar with. Most of the people really interested in this are the librarians, and they usually aren't very technical. Give them a remote and a guide and they will do just fine.

I work in a school as well and we have implemented an IP video streaming solution also.

Currently we use Microsoft share point with mms:// streams that load up in windows media player when someone clicks on the weblinks. This helps share the bandwidth and is very easy to use by teachers.

It works really well, but I would be interested in using media portal for capturing tv signals, of course for this it would be essential to have a web interface that was easy to schedule recordings, and some way to integrate this into sharepoint.
