This is my first post, so I hope I did this correctly.
My goal is to build a customized PVR/DVR/HTPC to schedule recordings consisting of mostly analog cable television and view the recordings on my television at a later date/time while watching another program. I would also like to pause "live tv", have use of a program guide and time shift etc. Please assist me.
I have a PC consisting of a P4 processor, Intel 840 chipset, RDRAM, Nvidia GeForce 3 Video Card (VGA only), Turtle Beach Santa Cruz sound Card, 3 empty PCI slots, USB's, modem, DVD Player, CD-RW, etc. I also have a Pinnacle Studio PCTV-USB and inquiring to find out if it will successfully work with any of the DVR software programs? The PCTV-USB (NTSC) has a USB interface, Cable TV (in), Radio (in), TV - Audio (out), Video Input Video capture adapter - S-video, Composite, Audio. I realize the hardware isn't brand new, but I would still like to try to use them, instead of collecting dust. I have a feeling I will probably need some type of drivers, plug-in's or such for the PCTV-USB to work properly. I keep reading about MPEG2 encoding/decoding???
The PC needed a new hard drive, so in a sense I am now working with a blank slate. At the time, it was running Windows XP Pro, but if need be, it doesn't necessarily need to.
I understand there are both, free and pay software DVR programs for Windows and Linux. Please note, that I am not a Linux user, but who knows. If the systems perform at a higher success rate, they may have found themselves a new user.
I think I have covered all aspects of what I have to work with, but if you need additional information or clarification, please let me know.
Thanks to all for your guidance.
