I have an MCE2005 remote, and following the instructions from these two links has worked for me.

Go here "How to resume from S3 using your MCE remote", and here "S3 Standby - Hardware & Software solution"

I did have to use the USBBIOSx registry hack for the Power Management tab to appear under Device Manager.

I was NOT required to re-install Windows XP.
