I am hoping to build a htpc media server running Mediaportal and using a dual DVB-S2 pci-e satellite card. I would like the machine to use as little power as possible as it will be running most of the time. I would also like to be able to stream media quickly and play full hd, hd audio, bitstreaming etc. I was first looking at the Sandy Bridge processors as there are some good reviews suggesting they would be a good for a htpc build but I have also read they do not support correct frame rate for most movies (24p). Instead the suggestion seems to be to buy a graphics card instead that can support this. So may be Sandy Bridge might be a little wasted?

I would really appreciate any suggestions for hardware. So far I have decided on a case . I have chose this case because it fits the space where the htpc will be housed. Lian Li PC-V352 B HTPC Chassis - Inside the Lian Li PC-V352 B Desktop / HTPC Chassis :: TweakTown USA Edition

This AMD motherboard looks appealing because it has usb3, sata3 and a decent number of sata ports (trying to future proof this as much as possible without getting too expensive). MSI 890GXM-G65 review | Expert Reviews
Thinking about the power issue, what cpu would people recommend? Which PSU would be suitable? How much RAM and what brand?

Thanks in advance for help.

For cpu you could go with

AMD Athlon II X2 265 Regor 3.3GHz 65W Dual Core
    or
    AMD Athlon II X4 610e Propus 2.4GHz 45W Quad-Core

Ram is fairly cheap 4gb should be good, brand just go with a name brand

PSU this all depends on how many drives and what else will be in it
but some good brands are Seasonic, Corsair, Antec

It really all depends on what you wanna spend

    wanna use multi-seat or single-seat?

dedicated TV-Server a Atom or AMD Zacate will be enought.

    i run a DC Atom 2x1.5 Ghz and it has 8 HDD's running -
    2 TV-Service- & file-clients - plus 2 file clients (neighbours)
    - atom CPU power is enought for those jobs.

more information about your constellation wish would be cool... :)

    regards
