How can I see if TV picture is MPEG2 or MPEG4? (1 Viewer)

I have bad picture quality on my FireDTV with MediaPortal. If I adjust the MPEG2 brightness control in MP it effects the TV picture, but if I adjust the brightness of the H.264 properties of the CoreAVC, nothing happens to the TV picture.

How can I confirm that CoreAVC is used to control my TV picture and not some other codec?

Any ideas how to get as crisp pictures as I did with the box from the cable company (Canal Digital Sagem HD PVR)?
Now I have to much noise in the picture.

Use alt-enter to view MP in windowed mode, get and run graphstudio, connect to remote graph with TV\video playing, this will then show you which codecs are being used.
