I've got MP 1.0.1 and a hauppauge remote.

If I'm browsing through my albums and a track is already playing (by pressing OK on it) I choose another one by scrolling to it, pressing 'i' to bring up a context menu one item of which is Playlist. Select that to bring up another menu
Add toPlaylist
Add All To Playlist
Play Next
Play Now
...

if I Add To Playlist, MP always plays the next track from the currently playing album

a) is the playlist automatically made the current album? (if I OK on a track?)
b) its a faff to queue up a track

I suppose what I'd like is OK on a track to add it to the playlist, if the playlist is empty play the next track in the current folder. Is this configureable?

The same goes for videos btw, except that it only ever plays one video and never queues them

If you press [play], rather then OK, then a new playlist with that song is started. Then you can manually add more as you describe.
If you use the scrobbler-feature, then MP will automatically try to add songs to the playlist.
