You can't change the recording format, but you can convert the recorded file from DVR-MS to MPEG2 - just use the "compress" feature in MediaPortal (Just go to TV->Recordings->compress and select mpeg compression). "Compress" is a bit of a misnomer, since all it does in this case is remove the dvr-ms wrapper, leaving the mpeg2 file.toddbailey said:

Not exactly what I was hoping for.
This looks like a manual step that has to be performed for every instance of when a recording is made. What I'd like to see in the future is MP dumping dvr-ms format or adding the mpg recording format along with the option to select various audio and video bit rates.

OK I stand corrected, partially that is I see that there is a auto compress feature that appears to just this.

Can you try excluding the recording folder of all background processes? (f.e. defender/antivirus etc, and maybe (don't know if that is even a thing) from creating thumbnails)
