How to play external subtitles in MP? (1 Viewer)

First of all I have to congratulate to the developers for such a great software.

After long hours of tweaking I'm almost done configuring and tweaking MP. I'm just having some trouble with external subtitles. Some of the mkv movies I play have subtitles, but since none of them have spanish subtitles, I download them separetly. With Zoomplayer or VLC I can add external subtitles (in Zoomplayer I just have to name the srt or sub file with the same name as the movie file and with VLC I can configure it to play an specific subtitle file with a certain movie file). I have one particular movie that doesn't include subtitles, and the external file .sub file that I renamed with the movie file name automatically plays in MP. But it seems that if the mkv file includes subtitles MP just doesn't play the external subtitles.
The question is:

¿is there something similar in MP's internal player that allowes me to play my external subtitle files?

Try using VOBSUB instead, which adds support for WMP subtitles which MP relies on.
The other players everything is built into them so no need for vobsub.

Yes there are. You have to instal Vob sub https://www.team-mediaportal.com/files/Download/Codecs/Video/VobSub/
Then rename the sub files so they have the same name as the movie.

Then use the green or yellow button (MCE remote). Then there are a key on the keyboard...i think 'a' or 'o'.

You can also use ffdshow. The .sub file will have to be called the same name as the movie file. Remember to enable ffdshow post processing in the config menu.

Thanks a lot guys,

I installed Vob sub and nothing changed with the subtitles, I could still play the ones included in the mkv files, but not the external subs I aded. What did change, was that all that time I spent tweaking MP went down the tube: some files stoped playing and no more fullscreen video. I think some codec conflict was going on. I tried reinstalling everything but didn't worked. I think that's just a something we have to live with if we want a fully customized HTPC.

Since I will do all this one more time, I want to do it right so I have one specific question:
As I described on my first post, one of my movies is just an avi file where I included the external subtitles files with the same name and MP showed the subtitles from the begining, but when I play an mkv movie with integrated subtitles, my external subtitles are just ignored. This makes me think the external subs can be played but there is some conflict when integrated subs are present.

Any ideas on how I can get arround this?

hmmm, not a real MP solution:
You might simply include the external subs into the MKV container. This is a fast action. Eg. with theses tools:
