I've just installed MediaPortal today, I cannot figure it out

Nothing works!

My MCE remote doesn't let me go back, so I have to keep using my mouse. Also, I can't find ANY of my music or video files on the program. It just comes up "Videos"... but it's empty.

How do configure the program, without having to learn the "MediaPortal Language" ??

I just want to watch my movies & TV, this is too much work!

iMEDIAN was easy to use, I don't want all this!

ANY media centre application will require some basic level of configuration for it to work.

You dont need to learn any 'special' language to use MP

As far as MP goes, its more sophisticated than some other solutions available, so there are more configuration options available. Rule of thumb is to set up the most basic aspects with no additional plugins, using the default skin. Once you have those worked out, drill down to the other parts.

If you want a 'no-brainer' then may be wise to go back to Imedian. I assume though that it wasnt doing everything you wanted it to, or you wouldnt be trying MP?

As far as finding your media files goes, it sounds like you haven't set the paths correctly in the configuration app

    Have you read the manual?

Have you read any forum posts?

All the information is there, and if you encounter any specific problems you cant solve, post on the forum and someone here will help you.

I can't even get the remote to work properly, yet iMEDIAN works fine with it, no set-up required.

I want to use MediaPortal as I know what it can do, I've seen what it's capabilities are.

iMEDIAN won't let me watch TV without launching another app, & Media Center constantly crashes out on me; even with my PC spec!

If I can get the remote to work, I might just get somewere with MediaPortal. But so far, all I can do is use UP, DOWN, LEFT RIGHT & ENTER. None of the other commands do anything. I've read about people using software to manually set what each button on the remote does, surely there is an easier way than that, I'm using the regular MCE remote!

I did manage to find my files eventually, I thought playlist was the file location, thats why I did it wrong.

Also how do I play my MKV movie files in MediaPortal?

The only codecs I have ever installed on this system is the FFDshow pack.

I know there's a lot of information on this, but thats's the problem :(

I've been sifting for hours looking for the answer to this remote problem. I figure it best to ask the "MediaPortal People" :p

Eventghost may be *one* way (im sure there are others) to fix the remote problems. I just used it to set up an MCE remote with XBMC and it worked really well.

    Add plugin MCE REMOTE
    Add plugin MEDIAPORTAL

    and work from there

For any buttons that dont work, press the button so it registers on the left pane, then drag and drop the event to the action in the righ pane you want it to control.

To play MKV, Uninstall FFDSHOW and install SAF,

    *****OR*****

    Install Matroska Media Splitter
    Haali Media Splitter

Just to make sure: you have selected the MCE remote in the MediaPortal config app right? I always forget to do this on a fresh install.

Have a look here for a codec/filter pack specifically for MP: https://forum.team-mediaportal.com/...-55/standalone-filters-mediaportal-saf-44614/
