Idiot Newbie Question: Initial DB Login ... (1 Viewer)

Hi Folks,

BEFORE I posted this thread, I searched the forum for al relevant posts but found nothing useful. Perhaps I'm just blind.

Dumb newbie question: After installing Media Portal on my Vista 64 PC, I cannot get past the initial DB login screen.

Here's what I get when I try to login to the DB as instructed in the install notes and then click the "Test" button:

First: "Warning. Test failed: Login failed for user 'sa'. The user is not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection."

Second: "Connection failed! Login failed for user 'sa'. The user is not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection."



I have confirmed that MS SQL Server 2005 and SQL EXPRESS are running on my PC. I have looked at the MS SQL Server Configuration Manager, but I cannot find a "User Account" section in that interface.

Any advice on this would be much appreciated. I was looking forward to having a competent alternative to Windows Media Center, which I have slowly come to loathe!

Unless you changed it during the install, it should be MediaPortal.

Hmmm. I do not recall changing the password or even being offered the chance to do so during installation. I was briefly away from my computer after I launched the installation and answered the initial questions, so I suppose it is possible that I was offered that chance and it eventually timed out and used the default. However, the default login values are not working.

Is there any value in doing an uninstall/reinstall just to be sure?

How can I ad a user called "sa" to my list of authorized MS SQLExpress users? Is that even a worthwhile thing to do in this regard?

Generally, I am not a Microsoft "hater" but in this case, I am not looking forward to further use of Windows Media Center!

If you really want to change the password, you may need to uninstall/reinstall everything. I'm not aware of a way to change the password after the installation.

Out of curiosity, why would you want to change the password? After the initial setup, I've never had to worry about the SQL password.

I had the same problem on xp I ended up uninstalling and reinstalling and going through each process slowly and I finally got it to work it took me 3 attempts.
I am not sure but maybe you need to install by right clicking and choosing administrator installation but that part I am just guessing because it is vista

ANSWER: I don't. The only reason I thought it might help is due to the wording of the error messages I already quoted.

Obviously, something else is going on here.

I suppose it would be wise to ensure that the installation is being done as an administrator. This raises a very obtuse and irritating feature of Vista. A created user account that is assigned ADMIN level priviledges is STILL not exactly the same permission level that is afforded by selecting "Run as Administrator" from the right-click menu for an installer file. I was recently told that by a high-level Miscrosoft Support Tech. However, I digress. Vista is not the issue here.

I'll uninstall Media Portal and try re-installiong with that method.
