Hi,
im new with Mediaportal and i hoped i would be a nice to cofigure program. But i spend much time on searching for plugins and infos and it is getting very frustrating.

For example i see no scroll bar to scroll forward when i play movies or music and i can find no information why.
Next thing is that MediaPortal looks a bit cheap out of the box and its hard to find informations about usefull coverflow-like plugnins and posibilities to add and show tags, pics, informations, lyrics, ... to my music and videos.
I guess it is possible to add a browser to surf in the internet, is there any plugin or something like that?

The search in this forum wasn't very helpfull so far. I already read the manual and the wiki but its just hard to find the information i need.

Maybe somebody could make a beginner guide and list which plugins are usefull and how a beginner can start with a existing media collection but few experience with media-center-software.

Hi,

Welcome to MP.

In fact, you've got to search a bit when you begin. But everything you're asking for could be find on the website or forums.

"For example i see no scroll bar to scroll forward when i play movies or music and i can find no information why." Use the left and right arrow keys to navigate into video, music, tv or your left right remote buttons

"I guess it is possible to add a browser to surf in the internet, is there any plugin or something like that?". You could find all the plugins into the download section. Browse "Download/plugin/archive" to find a lot of plugins. ex : Web - Plugins

Pay attention that the forums are divided into different forums "General", "Mediaportal1", ... You could find all your information into the "Mediaportal1" forum.

Hope it could help you to enjoy this amazing software! :D

I would suggest you download and configure Moving pictures here " Plugins - MediaPortal - The Open Source Media Center " configure in Mediaportal configure \ plugins (Read the documentation for Moving pictures) it will do a better job of scraping for movie info and downloads fan art too.

Many skins are available for Mediaportal to change the look I would suggest aMPed you can find it here" Skins - MediaPortal - The Open Source Media Center" it has 4:3 and 16:9 with 4 different theme's again read the documentation for the skin you pick and configure accordingly.

Being new you should stick with the maintained plugins until you get used to the program as some of the older plugins wont work with the new versions of Mediaportal, you can find them here"https://forum.team-mediaportal.com/maintained-plugins-161/

Thank you for your infos that is helping me.

I read in the forum and i still think that it is confusing, like another member said about plugins:

Damn - download ? - I thought it was supposed to be seen somewhere in MP-configuration or extension installer.

this is a problem with MP
-some plugins are in MP-Configuration (ok)
-some are in extension installer (ok - mostly uninstalled)
-Some are in forum threads
-and some in the download page of team-mediaportal.

-some are in both the last places, and one must search and compare, because only one is the current version...

This is confusing & annoying - I hope somebody will try to fix the problem soon (create a common place for all plugins)

Well since the new website is released, there is a common place for all extensions.

But this should not mean that it's impossible to add extensions without being in the plugin directory. It's an open system and no apple like closed eco system.

Yes it's not as easy as it should, but if you want to build a great media center, you will have greater problems than this.

Thank you for your help.
Im getting more and more used with this program. I have 2 more questions:
- isn't it possible to move the progress-sliders in movies and songs with the mouse?
- if there is no information to a movie i always see a blank cover in the movie-overview and i dont know which movie it is until i switch to that movie, then the title is shown under the cover. Is there a way to show the filename of the movie on the blank cover so i can always know which movie it is?

Hi!

Don't know about the mouse slider thing but about the missing covers... are you using moving pictures as video plugin or the standard MP Video section?
If you are just starting you should give this skin a try: streamedmp - Project Hosting on Google Code Its nice looking and it comes with a few very handy plugins, such as moving pictures and MP-TV series to organize your movies and series in a nice way.

regards

i use the black glass nova skin with movingPictures mp-tv and some other plugins. I guess if a movie isnt in any database there cant be a cover for it. Thats no problem, the problem is that i dont see a filename if i dont choose the empty cover in the overview.

MediaPortal is not designed to be used with a mouse and keyboard. The whole point of using a media center like this is to sit on your sofa with a remote, just like you would with a regular TV and DVD player.
