Greetings. My setup is as follows:
Vista Home Premium
Media Portal 0.2.3
GeForce 8500GT - 256 MB
Intel Core Duo E4500
1 GB RAM
250 GB SATA drive

I am experiencing imperfections with video playback. The imperfections happen with both DVDs played in my DVD-ROM and videos stored on my hard drive. I have tried configuring Media Portal to use different codecs, but this does not improve the issue.

I had to disable to disable VMR9 due to the fact I needed to increase the font dpi on my screen to 144 dpi.

It is hard to describe the imperfections, except to say that there are horizontal blurry lines, and they tend to move slowly down the screen and then disappear. They are not persistent, and seem to happen only once or twice a minute.

Another interesting note is that this issue does not happen on Windows Media Center.

Try to enable vsync in your video card configuration panel... Enabling VMR9 exclusive mode should also fix this.

    Thanks for the suggestions.

I went into the nVidia Control Panel, and enabled vsync. This seemed to improve the quality partially, but not completely. Enabling VMR9 exclusive caused an issue where videos would not display in any aspect ration except for original. So I had to undo that configuration change.

    Any other suggestions?

The only other thing I can suggest is to try EVR or to try reclock, that has inbuild vsync correction.

This issue appears to be caused by disabling VMR9. I was able to fully resolve the issue by changing the system font back to the default 96 dpi, and then enable VMR9 support.

So, with given the following choices:

    1) Increase the font on the system, have readable Windows text on the desktop, disable VMR9 support, and have imperfections in the video

    or

    2) Keep the font on the system at 96 dpi, have really small Windows text on the desktop, enable VMR9 support, and have good quality video playback

    I choose number 2.
