Any input on this (silent) selection for recording tv, playback of dvd and audio, maybe some 3d games and possibility for expanding to digital TV and HD-stuff later on:

I have your memory and hard disk.

The memory is very silent in operation

The disk is a bit clicky when busy, but otherwise quite quiet. I bought Seagate because the 120Gb disk I put in my TiVo is near silent - this disk is marginally louder.

The 120 GB Seagate is only € 20,- cheaper than the 200 GB. But if you say the 120 is more silent i'm considering to go for that one instead. With the 120 GB you mean the ST3120827AS, S-ATA ?

Its not the SATA one.

I installed it over a year ago and is in a very securely fastened TiVo so I wouldn't really be able to get you a Product no.

It is a standard IDE unit.

Would you expect a S-ATA, IDE or difference in cache to have any effect on the noise production? Would it be that more speed equals more noise...?

With most drives you can use a program to set it in a more quiet but marginaly slower mode. Just check the manufacturers website.

I've got 2 Seagate Barracuda Hdd's and they are Quiet size has nothing too do with it its RPM and seagate are now reknowned as the quietest Hdd's on the Market and if anyone quotes samsung i have a very noisy one in a backup external box they can borrow. if youve got a noisy seagate return it its faulty.
