Yesterday I have bought the brand new XBox 360 wired controller (gamepad) and connected it with my WindowsXP based PC.
It was totally not working -- every app, wich try to initialize it reporting bugs or even not starting. Even dxdiag.exe and joy.cpl

Today I have found the fix -- I had to stop the IRSS service, wich is supporting my Microsoft MCE remote against the MP.
Even when the controller is not connected, the games, which try to initialize it, are not starting until I stop the IRservice.

Does anybody have any ideas? It is not the soluton to stop the IRservice every time I want to use the gamepad and not forget to start it after. Even more: after service restart I also need to restart manually the IR Tray Launcher to catch again the green button.

Seems that I have solved the issue.

I have reinstalled the IRSS to the latest build and unchecked in it's configyration the "Direct Input" plugin.

On my previous IRSS installation it was not checked, I am sure.

    Again this topic comes up.
I have upgraded IRSS 1.4.2(3099) to the 1.4.2(3158)

Now every program, trying to initialize the gamepad, can't start correctly, unless I stop the IRSS service.
Also my MP, that is hosted fullscreen on the second display, started to gain the focuse immediately every time after loosing it.
I have played with checks in the IRSS settings and Tray Launcher settings -- nothing helped me for both issues.

So, I have rolled things back to the IRSS 1.4.2(3099) -- and all now is working like a charm.

P.S. May be it would be better to join the IRSS service and IR Tray Launcher in the single app? Because of their intercommunication problems and process/icons multiplication.

Same problem here, although I am using a Sidewinder USB gamepad. With the IRSS service running, the gamepad is recognized under Device Manager, but it will not work. If I go into the Windows control panel and double-click the "Game Controllers" item (where you can calibrate/configure the gamepad), the window does not open and nothing happens while the IRSS service is running.

Stopping the IRSS service allows the gamepad to function normally again.

In my IRSS configuration, nothing is checked other than MCE Remote.

    reeven,

I don't think anyone is trying to use IRSS to map their gamepads.
The problem is that it locks the ability for other programs (including xpadder) from accessing the controller at all.
