Hey,
I was wondering if it is possible to make MediaPortal boot before windows does. The reasoning behind this is so that I dont have to wait for ages and ages while windows goes through its lengthy booting proccess. Is there any way to do this?

If not, it would be a very cool thing to add into the next release. It could work like Geexbox (http://www.geexbox.org/en/index.html) where it is burnt onto a CD which you can boot from. I dunno, but it would be very usefull for MediaCentre PC's which are in the lounge so you can just flick on the computer and watch TV (like normal) without booting windows and waiting forever....

wow, man...

I think this is not possible!

Actually I am pretty sure it is not.
I think if you want to use Mediaportal you should look for some tips on get your pc booting faster.

These boot from CD things are never faster than a slick Windows bud!

    Hi phpchris

No this is not possible as MP relies on the XP operating system to be able to work.
But maybe in the future of computing this may well be a possibility.

Have you considered using Standby or Hibernate instead of Shutdown? The startup of Windows, and hence Mediaportal, is close to instantaneous from S3 (Standby).... :)

maybe it's possible to start MP as service? i once tried BPMstudio, a kinda DJ-software - and it was possible to start it as service, it was the only thing started up means: no dektop, no taskbar, no add. startup programs etc... this surely would be a perfomance plus... i will check it out now and post the results...

ps: all ext. programms or service are still runnable via ctrl+alt+del and execute

edit: it's not "start as service" but "start as exclusive shell application"

    here you go:
open the registry (execute regedit.exe) and change the value of "shell" in:

    Hkey_Local_Machine/Software/Microsoft/windows nt/winlogon/
    and:
    Hkey_Current_user/Software/Microsoft/windows nt/winlogon/

    from "explorer.exe" to "Drive:/MPdirectory/mediaportal.exe"

from now on windows starts up and the only thing that is shown is mediaportal. i testet it and everything seemed to be working, but much smoother than usual. this will be quite useful for those with a real HTCP, i think i will post this in the tips&tricks section..

btw: ich you want to change it back, simply open your taskmanager (usually ctrl+alt+del) and open regedit again. then undo the changes thus enter explorer.exe for shell...

Yeah i saw a script program that did that. But what I mean is starting Mediaportal before the windows XP boot screen even comes up. Before the log on screen even comes up. Read the stuff here http://www.geexbox.org/en/start.html

Qoute from the site "So, GeeXboX is a full operating system, running under Linux and based on the excellent MPlayer. No need for a hard drive, you just have to put the GeeXboX bootable CD into the CD-Drive of any Pentium-class computer to boot it"

Maybe Mediaportal could be used that way.

"You may wonder why you should have to boot another operating system to play your media files, but just think about the Mini-ITX platforms like VIA Epia/Eden or Shuttle barebones. It's now affordable to bring DivX to your home cinema, plugging this kind of computer directly to your TV !!"

As it says, its great for Set top boxes. Maybe a special boot-release ISO which you burn to a CD could be possible?
