Is the tv server and client very shaky and unreliable? (1 Viewer)

Hi!

This is not really a support question but a more general question.

My win XP based system running latest MediaPortal SVN is almost rock steady. I can leave it on for days playing music and videos without any problem. But as soon as I start doing anything with the TV thing (latest SVN 0.3 version, single site setup) the problems start:

a)
one out of five times I enter the TV I'm requested of where the server is. The TV service has simply quit by itself.

b) The EPG just works for a few channels and only for around 24h after a new SVN installation and configuration.

c) Sometimes the whole media portal application freezes and I must kill the process. This happens when I try to start the TV.

Are these problems just the way it is? It's absolutely okay for, I mean it's still early beta. But if I'm having more problems than what should be expected I would like to narrow them down to get a good system including TV services.

So, am I running a normal system or am I just unlucky?

    Hi,

I'm running tvserver as a single seat.
System is on production, meaning whole family is using it as a main televison.

Very few hickups and it is quite stable for us.

EPG info on most finnish channels are not as good as they could be.

I'm using dvb-t card as a souce of tv stram.

    I’ve found the TV3 stable as...more stable then TV2

    a) Never come across this problem
    b) I use web EPG and don’t have a problem
    c) I’ve started a single seat, watch some TV then gone away for a week and come home and found everything is still working watch the same channel I left it on

The only complication I’ve come across is my client because its running on Vista X86.

    a) You mentioned that the server has quit by itself. I presume that you have verified this in the services? The reason I asked is because I came accross a similiar problem where the client asked for the server address. The service was however still running.

It happenned the server is not available on the network, or in my case its IP has changed. Example: Three PC's on home network. PC1 with fixed IP 192.168.0.1. PC2 and PC3 with dynamic IP addresses (get address from PC1). Lets say TV-server is on PC2. If PC1 is not started, then PC2 will have an address in the range of 169... (I think). As soon as you start PC1, then the address on PC2 and PC3 will change to the 192... range. I found that this is causing the problem you explained in point a.

This is just an example. Many other possibilities exist.
I know this will not be applicable if you are sure that the service has stopped.

    hi,

on air since last week, seems to work smooth for me.
there are only few issues which I will analyze further the next days:
    1. radio-tv switching: switching to radio channel takes some time, often the wrong channel is choosen. MP plays audio from last tv channel instead of radio. Switching back to tv channel crashes MP client (reproduceable). I will have a look at the log files next time.
    2. mp-client crashes on timeshift rewind (reproduceable): Start Windows, Start MP (timeshift on tv server was started), switch between different channels, viewing a tv channel rewind back to a time before the last channel change happened->freeze. There's no way to get out of MP in this case. Only way out is to kill the MP client process over a remote desktop connection. Tv server continues working, seems just to be a problem with the MP client.

The tv server seems to be more stable than the MP client (plugin) is.

    My config:
    Single site, newest snapshots
Core Duo 6550 on ASUS P5W DH Deluxe
    Hauppauge NOVA-S2
    ATI 2600XT
    PowerDVD 7.3

    Regards
    Arno

Thank you guys. You have given me motivation to start investigating my problems. As a parantese I just recorded 19 hours TV without any problems. :) Yes, it was a misstake, but nevertheless, the system cooped and has been up for almost 24 hours now! :)
