having been to a party where selection of music was not easy
and going to have a party myself,
i was thinking how it would be easier to navigate in a music jukebox (especially with just the remote)

and cameup with this, sorry for the uglyness, but its a rough visualization of the idea

navigation would be with the arrows only

leftmost column = genre, "*" = all genres
next = alphabetic letter selection, * = all letters
next = artist column, result of previous 2
center column = the song list, result of previous selections on the left columns.
the right would be a playlist selector, and a shuffler button

can i do this in mediaportal?

Can't you do this with... iTunes? I don't know when your party is, but it seems like a lot of work for something already available. I guess it depends of your type of remote as well. I have an MCE remote and I can use it to skip tracks, pause etc in iTunes. All you have to do is create a playlist with the music you need for your party. You can then sort it by genre, artist etc.

I know this is MediaPortal forums, but I rarely use the music section of it.

this does not look like any of the players i tried, and reliance on playlist is not the basis of this setup,

but my question was if i can do this with MediaPortal or not

this is exactly what database views are for. you can set them up in mediaportal configuration. the only thing you can't do (in MP 1, that is ;) ), is the layout - if i'm not mistaken.
