Sorry if I missed this somewhere else in the forum, but I have a problem (don't we all  )

Playback of divx, xvid etc is choppy / jerky in MediaPortal, but smooth when viewed in Media Player.

I tried using the external player option to specify Media Player and it launches fine, but it's a bit annoying 1) if the mouse is in the wrong place on the screen, then Media Player doesn't go full screen 2) There's no way to get back to MediaPortal (that I found) automatically after you hit stop on the movie, so you end up having to get off your back side and close Media Player using the mouse. Annoying.

I have a MCE remote control which works fine, but it doesn't control regular windows (that I know of) so I can't close Media Player with that either.

Why the stuttering video playback in MediaPortal but not when using Windows Media Player?

It's a new machine with decent spec so I don't think the issue is that the hardware isn't fast/good enough.........besides which, the movie plays fine in Media Player (and I see CPU usage etc is not high).

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

....I'm close to giving up and taking MS Windows Media Center Edition, which I don't wanna do.

Can you use the support template found here
    https://forum.team-mediaportal.com/viewtopic.php?t=6438
because what you are experiencing should not happen, also which version of divx you have and have you tried ffdshow. any of the above hardware, or codecs could give you a problem unique to yourself,
That is why as much information as possible is needed

Synopsis:: - video playback is jerky in MediaPortal but not when viewed through Media Player.

which version of divx you have and have you tried ffdshow

Not using ffdshow. All-in-one codec pack with latest versions of the codecs, I guess.

So, it looks like my Directx is up-to-date. I have tried using the 'force directx' option and not using it and still get same behaviour. Have tried to do the alt-enter trick to put MediaPortal into 'real fullscreen mode' as per the tips and tricks forum area, but the this setting gets set only temporarily and when in effect my video is still a bit jerky and remote control stops working fully!

Wow! That was a quick reply. Thanks!

Have you got "use exclusive directx mode for fullscreen TV/Video" activated in general settings / configuration?

Also, play around with the Shift+! to get some additional information (like frames skipped etc) (or maybe that just worked with the TV thingy, Im unsure)

Get rid of the codec pack, they cause to many problems.
Recommend divx5.2.1 and xvid codec individually or as another option download ffdshow and use that instead and see if any improvement.

I've tried using "use exclusive directx mode for fullscreen TV/Video" and not using it and still get the issue.

I'll try shift+! Never knew about that.

    Thanks.

would it be that you are using a low end video card ? is it a directx card ? i had a simlar issue when i was using an on board video card - upgraded to my radeon 9550 and issue went away. ?

Well, I take the point about it not being great spec but I've not convinced this is the root cause given that I can play videos fine with no jerking if I just use Windows Media Player.

I'm not sure about whether the onboard graphics supports DirectX or what, but I will check that aspect out - thanks for the tip. I need to rule out DirectX related issues...

Thanks for the tips. Not sure whether I'll perservere with this or give up and go Windows Media Center Edition.

Yeah - ffdshow sounds pretty cool so I'm gonna have a go at that. I'll try removing the codec pack too and install individually.

    Thanks,

    Ok, here goes....

Changed onboard video to use 256Mb RAM, leaving me just another 256Mb RAM for OS and MediPortal. Installed ffdshow and set MediaPortal to use it. Tried the 'force directx' option again.

    Still no joy.
