Hi, I'll start with some specs:
OS: Vista ultimate 64 bit
CPU: P4 3.0 GHZ w/ hyperthreading
RAM: 1x2 GB keingston ram
TV tuner: ASUS falcon 2

I am a haveing a problem installing media portal, when it asks me to download SQLEXPR64.EXE then run it there is only SQLEXPR.EXE on the microsoft website, I read somewhere this contains the 64 bit and 32 bit versions. So I download it and let media portal take it away, however after some time I get a error message saying something like "MS SQL Server could not be installed" I click ok and everything closes. So, I tried to Install the SQL thingy myself so media portal wouldn't have to... But that wouldn't work either, It gave me the following error message(s) "SQL server VSS writer failed to start", "SQL server service failed to start". I am stumped at what to do next, and suggestions would be great, Thanks in advance.

Okay, Thanks! I will give it a try, I hope it works and I will get back to you.

Nope... Dang. It's still giveing me a bunch of errors if i try to install it on it's own and MediaPortal can't get it to install either. Something about "cannot find (specific file)". I just want this to work, maybe I just need a more expinsive TV tuner.

I dont know if you have tried this but totally uninstall everything that media portal did before it got to the error with MS SQL to. I also have Vista x64 here.

I even tried to drop the relevant files into the MP download folder that is used so that MP would pick up that they were there. It didnt work for me wither.
So I thought why am I using MS SQL why not try the other option MYsql. I gave it a go and bingo it downloaded the correct versions etc and installed as normal.

Dont know if it effects anything but all the plugins that I have that use a DataBase are working so far. My TVseries, MovingPictures, Music, MyProgramsALT etc....

I hope this may help you?

    Regards

Okay, Sorry for my lengthy response as I have been away for awhile. Thanks a lot for your help guys, I really appreciate it and I really like these forums (they tell me when I spell stuff wrong). I will try to uninstall everything and take screen shots of some errors. Thanks again
