Is the mentioned codec pack fine to work with Mediaportal?

K-Lite is overkill for mediaportal. Some report it working ok. others run into trouble.

I wouldn't say Klite is overkill. It has almost all codecs..

Ill give that a go though. I might even try KLite see how it goes and then revert.

I am interested to hear others experiences with the KLite codec pack.

All an all-in one pack that I will be better off with.

All-in-ones are a good recipe for trouble imho. You have much more control installing specific codecs for specific media files. And when something goes wrong you know who to blame and where to look. Klite, although the choice of many for allround media playback is usually present in problematic media handling.

Are these issues in regards to codec packs just problematic when it comes to Mediaportal?
I have had CCCP installed on my computer for a while now and have had no issues.

No I am talking in general. Codec packs don't install updated codec versions and usually lack properconfiguration menus. For example Klite doesn't instal the ffdshow configuration file which is unacceptable imo. CCCP is regarded as the best of these in terms of simplicity

Okay, so what would you recommend?

I will only be viewing AVI (XviD, DivX)and mkv(x264).

They would be the main file types I will be viewing. What do you recommend I install?

the latest version of ffdshow tryouts would be more than enough for you. If you wish to have hardware acceleration as well for the HD videos install the standalone MPC-HC filter MPCVideoDec.ax as well and configure it accordingly

What exactly does the the hardware acceleration do?

It offloads decoding resources from the cpu to the graphics processor. If you watch an HD video the cpu is strained to decode it. By using hardware acceleration the cpu remains near idle and the video card processor does all the work. It is recommended for low end cpus
