Laggy TV picture/poor quality (1 Viewer)

Hi All,

Running XP and MP1.2 using SAF/Power DVD 10 codecs for TV but the wife says the picture is laggy...and like movie filmed from the back of a cinema. Switching between the SAF5 codec and Power DVD 10 codecs makes no difference. I have a Radeon 5450 HD graphics card running at 1080p to a Sony 40" LCD via HDMI. Using a Peak DVB-T tuner.

What needs changing/replacing? Codec, graphics settings, tuner?

Any advice is much appreciated?

Hi Dan

You're going to have to define "laggy" and "poor quality" better.
Is it:
- stuttering
- jagged edges on straight lines
- general bluriness
- blur of things that are moving
- audio <-> video sync

It won't be the tuner as the tuner is format/resolution/encoding agnostic. It could be the output resolution or post processing settings that you've set on the video card. Alternatively, it could also just be low quality content...

Hi, I would say it's slightly zaggy/blurry when moving. I can't really see it tbh. This was eastenders on BBC1, I'll have to check other channels later.

I agree with mm1352000 - turn off all the video card post-processing in Catalyst (except de-interlacing) - and any noise reduction in the TV.

Okay, in Catalyst Control Center, have you got "enforce smooth video playback" checked, and how hard is the GPU working when you're watching TV? I suspect either a bad deinterlacing setting or the GPU is being pushed beyond its limits...

Could be a mismatch between display and video refresh rates.

"blurry when moving" - this can be caused by SW deinterlacing - make sure you have DXVA in use.

Make sere you reduce de-noise in CCC - this is good settings:

Enforce smooth video is on. Display set to 50hz. Activity is at 88% when on 720p and 1080p.

If you are after a good video quality - disable all PQ settings. They just ruin the image (again a good marketing bulls*** - just like the megapixels in digital cameras).
