I have xp home and windows xp media center edition. I want this primarily to be a hidef pvr to record from a airstar hd5000. I am obviously planning on using media portal. Will media center help in any way? Also will it add to my system overhead and make my system less efficient?

MediaPortal will not benefit from having Windows XP MCE under it. The only difference I know of that might have any effect at all is if you use an MCE IR Remote Control in XP Home you will need to download some drivers for it.

Windows XP MCE does load some additional services at boot time that you would want to disable if you were using it exclusively with MediaPortal.

I would say that the "Best Fit" of an operating system for MediaPortal is Windows XP Pro SP2, because it doesn't have any MCE services that need to be disabled, but it does have the MCE IR Remote Control driver...

But all in all, there is very little difference between the various flavours of Windows XP, and nothing that can't be overcome.

    Hope that helps,

I've run MediaPortal on both MCE and XP Home. No real differences that I can see.

MCE does start quick quickly though, so there is less delay in launching MediaPortal.

From my research, MCE is basically XP Home with the Media Centre components added. So in reality there would be little difference. However you need to get some drivers to get the Windows remote to work in XP Home.
