Is there a way or are there plans tom include the ability to handle a media extender. I am nearly finsihed wiring hte house with cat 6 cable. I would love to make use of Mediaportal in other rooms.
Not so much media extenders in the form of MCE Media Extenders - they use a proprietary interface so its difficult to make them work.
However, in the new version of MP (0.3), there will be the ability to do a client-server setup, that is, the server handles all the recording, physically has the tv cards, stores the music etc. and all the client does is access that via the server. This means the client can be much less powerful than the server - exact system requirements aren't know yet.
MCE Media Extenders will be a No-Go as explained before by Samuel337.
The next best thing is a device like the D-Link DSM-320, which allows you to listen to the music, view pictures and watch recorded tv from your media (or MediaPortal) PC. In addition you have to run a program like "TVersity" or "Windows Media Connect" to stream the media over the network.
The down turn of this type of set-up is that you can't stream live tv from MediaPortal or control MediaPortal over the network.
I'm using (or should I say my kids are using) the D-Ling DSM-320 together with TVeristy in my home set-up and it works like a charm.
On a standard evening we have MP recording 3 or 4 channels while watching previous recorded TV using MP, one of the kids using the DSM-320 to watch recorded tv and sometimes playing music of the XBox-360. All of this directly or streamed from my MP machine. Works like a charm every time.
Thanks Guys.
I appreciate the feedback.
I figured teh MCE extender was out of the question considering the propietery aspects of the devices. I guess what I was really looking for was a client server type function.
Does anyone have any idea when this will be avaiaible. I recognize that this is an effort thats being carried out in peoples spare time, but I am curious.
I have MCE at home and have seen no reason to unwrap it. MP rocks in my books.
Not that I have a clue how to use it yet.
Also I have read about something called a TV engine. IS there a place to get a copy or more information on it. My next step in the HTPC build is the tuner card, I am looking to do FTA on the unit. I get the feeling that the TVengine will deal with that for me.
The only configuration that is certain to work is when the MP client and MP server are from the same release.
It is sometimes possible to use MP clients from a release that is different to the MP server, but whether it works depends on the specific changes that were made between the two releases.

i love how subtitles are implemented in the MP2 videoplayer, this is just perfect. 1080p playback is also very good. But video playback in MP2 is buggy when playing 4k material. Therefore: PLEASE add an option for an external video player! I'd LOVE to have VLC back as videoplayer, like in MP1! This works perfectly. You will make a...

When I am trying to get some hardware or software to work and I am experiencing problems, my usual procedure is:
simplify, simplify, simplify.
That means avoid making choices that may not work; instead make the "standard" choice, which is often simply accepting the default.
A static IP address is known to work with MP1. An address...
