Most amps will have a "digitally controlled potentiometer" i.e. a variable resistor whose resistance can be controlled by setting a binary value. I've also seen Amps having a regular volume control knob that can be controlled from the remote using an internal motor (motor will actually turn the knob at the response of the IR remote). How is any of that going to degrade signal quality (I assume you do use some kind of volume control and do not leave your amp at 100%/0db right?)</blockquote>
