I'm helping my brother setup his new gaming PC in his office. He already has a main MediaPortal WinXP HTPC (no TV card) in the living room where everything is stored and played. They are both on the 10/100 LAN. All the media file folders are shared in Windows networking.
I thought about just running Vista-MediaCenter on the gaming box so he can occasionally play his media (MP3s, TV Series .avi, video_ts DVDs). It works ok but VMC is pretty lame compared to MP (mainly no real organization of episodes/seasons, fan art, or descriptions).
So, I'm thinking about putting a full version of MP on the gaming box as well. I'm not seeing (in the docs) anything special that needs to be done to setup a second MP station (not using TVServer really). You just setup MP and share the proper folders.
As long as I am on the right track here so far, I think my only question is about the MS-SQL Server Express "service". When MP is not running, we are looking for max performance out of the gaming box. I try to make my gaming boxes pretty lean installs. I don't mind the MS-SQL using a little memory in the background but does it use any processing power while sitting idle?
Do I need to look into running MP from a script/batch-file that:
Start MS-SQL Services
Start MediaPortal
Close MediaPortal
Stop MS-SQL Services
Thanks in advance.
I have edited these specs to match his gaming or slave/client PC.
